Citrus Ginger Wellness Shots

Jump to Recipe

I’ll be honest. I resisted wellness shots for a long time. They felt like something that belonged on a juice bar menu with a twelve-dollar price tag.

Then I started making them at home and realized how simple the whole thing is. Fresh lemon, orange, ginger, turmeric like in this anti-inflammatory smoothie, a crack of black pepper. That’s it.

The black pepper is not optional. It activates the curcumin in turmeric and bumps up absorption significantly. Skip it and you’re leaving most of the benefit on the table.

These take about ten minutes to pull together and keep in the fridge for five days. I make a batch on Sunday and the week basically sorts itself out.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • No juicer needed, just a blender and sieve
  • Five-day fridge life makes batch prep worth it
  • Black pepper boosts turmeric absorption naturally
  • Sharp, warming flavor that actually wakes you up

Ingredient Notes

  • Fresh ginger: Use a spoon to scrape the skin off before chopping. Pre-ground ginger is much weaker here, about 1/4 tsp ground per inch of fresh root if you’re stuck.
  • Fresh turmeric: Fresh turmeric gives a brighter, earthier flavor than powder. If you can’t find it, use 1 tsp ground turmeric per 2-inch piece called for.
  • Lemon: Freshly squeezed only. Bottled lemon juice has a flat, slightly bitter taste that doesn’t work well in shots.
  • Orange: Navel or Valencia both work. You want about 60 ml / 1/4 cup of juice per orange. Blood orange works for a more complex flavor.
  • Black pepper: Freshly cracked is best. Even a tiny pinch, about 1/8 tsp, is enough to activate the turmeric. Don’t skip it.
  • Raw honey (optional): Adds a light sweetness that softens the ginger heat. Maple syrup works if you want a vegan version.

Citrus Ginger Wellness Shots

Quick citrus ginger wellness shots made with fresh lemon, orange, ginger, and turmeric. No juicer needed, ready in 10 minutes.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes
Servings: 8 shots
Calories: 18

Ingredients

  • 120 ml fresh lemon juice from about 3 large lemons
  • 120 ml fresh orange juice from about 2 navel oranges
  • 60 g fresh ginger root, peeled and roughly chopped about a 3-inch piece
  • 30 g fresh turmeric root, peeled and roughly chopped about a 2-inch piece, or 1 tsp ground
  • 1/4 tsp freshly cracked black pepper
  • 1 tbsp raw honey or maple syrup optional, for sweetness
  • 120 ml cold filtered water to help blending

Method

  1. Juice your lemons and oranges using a citrus reamer or juicer. Set the juice aside.
  2. Peel the ginger and turmeric root using the edge of a spoon, then roughly chop both.
  3. Add the chopped ginger, turmeric, lemon juice, orange juice, black pepper, honey if using, and water to a high-speed blender.
  4. Blend on high for 60 seconds until the mixture is smooth and the ginger is fully broken down.
  5. Set a fine-mesh sieve over a large measuring jug or bowl. Pour the blended mixture through in batches, pressing the solids firmly with the back of a spoon to extract all the liquid.
  6. Strain a second time if you want a cleaner, less fibrous shot.
  7. Pour the strained liquid into small glass bottles or a sealed jar. You should get about 480 ml / 16 oz total, or 8 shots of 60 ml each.
  8. Refrigerate immediately. Shake well before each use as turmeric settles to the bottom.

Notes

Fresh turmeric stains cutting boards, hands, and clothing. Work fast and rinse your blender with cold water immediately after pouring.

Tips for Success

  • Peel ginger and turmeric with a spoon edge to avoid waste and speed up prep.
  • Blend on high for a full 60 seconds to break down fibrous ginger completely.
  • Strain twice through the fine-mesh sieve, pressing solids firmly with a spoon.
  • Pour shots into small glass bottles with tight lids to preserve freshness for 5 days.
  • Shake each bottle before drinking as the turmeric settles to the bottom overnight.

Variations

  • Add 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper for an extra heat kick that clears sinuses fast.
  • Swap orange for fresh pineapple juice to get a slightly tropical, softer sweetness.
  • Add 1 tbsp raw apple cider vinegar for gut-support and a sharper, more tart finish.

Storage and Reheating

Store shots in sealed glass bottles or small mason jars in the fridge for up to 5 days. Give each bottle a good shake before drinking as turmeric settles quickly.

You can freeze these in ice cube trays for up to 2 months. Pop one cube into warm water each morning and drink it once thawed. Don’t heat them above 60 C / 140 F or you’ll degrade some of the ginger’s active compounds.

Do not store at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Fresh citrus juice spoils fast without refrigeration.

Serving Suggestions

Take one shot (roughly 60 ml / 2 oz) straight, first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. That’s when most people feel the warming effect most clearly.

If the raw ginger heat is too sharp for you, chase the shot with a small glass of cold water or dilute it with 120 ml / 1/2 cup of cold water to make a light morning tonic.

These also work stirred into a mug of warm water with a little honey as a gentle ginger tea. It’s a good option in winter when you want something warming rather than cold.

FAQ

Why does my citrus ginger wellness shot taste bitter?

Bitter shots usually mean you blended in too much of the white pith from the lemon or orange. Always juice your citrus separately and add the juice, not the peeled whole fruit. Fresh turmeric can also add slight bitterness, which is normal.

Can I use ground turmeric instead of fresh turmeric root in these shots?

Yes, use 1 tsp ground turmeric for every 2-inch piece of fresh root called for. Ground turmeric blends in without straining, but fresh gives a brighter, slightly more peppery flavor.

How far in advance can I make a batch of these wellness shots?

You can make a full week’s worth on Sunday and they hold well for 5 days sealed in the fridge. After day five the citrus flavor starts to dull and the ginger heat fades noticeably.

What pairs well with citrus ginger shots as part of a morning routine?

A small handful of nuts or a piece of fruit eaten right after helps if the ginger irritates an empty stomach, or follow it with something more substantial like a warming anti-inflammatory oat bake. Many people also follow the shot with a glass of warm water and lemon to keep the routine going.

Are citrus ginger wellness shots safe to drink every day?

For most people, one 60 ml shot daily is fine and well tolerated. If you take blood thinners or have acid reflux, check with your doctor first since both ginger and citrus can interact with those conditions.

Are these citrus ginger shots suitable for a vegan diet?

Yes, as long as you skip the honey or swap it for maple syrup. Every other ingredient in the base recipe is plant-based.
