Turmeric Carrot Orange Smoothie

Jump to Recipe

I’ll be honest, I was skeptical about putting raw carrot in a blender. But paired with orange and turmeric, it turns into something surprisingly smooth and bright-tasting.

The orange carries the sweetness. The carrot adds body. The turmeric brings a warm, slightly earthy note that keeps the whole thing from tasting like fruit punch, much like it does in a blueberry turmeric oat smoothie.

It takes five minutes. It keeps you full longer than most smoothies. And the color alone is worth making it.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Ready in five minutes with zero cooking required.
  • Naturally sweet from carrot and orange, no added sugar.
  • High in vitamin A and C from whole ingredients.
  • Thick, filling texture that holds up for hours.

Ingredient Notes

  • Fresh carrots: Use medium, firm carrots for the best flavor and color. Pre-shredded carrots work in a pinch but tend to be drier and may require a splash more liquid.
  • Orange juice: Freshly squeezed gives the brightest flavor, but good-quality store-bought 100% orange juice works fine. Avoid orange drink or from-concentrate if you can.
  • Ground turmeric: A quarter teaspoon is enough to add color and a subtle warm note without overpowering the drink. Fresh turmeric (about a 1-inch piece, grated) is even better if you have it.
  • Frozen banana: This is what makes the smoothie thick and creamy. If you skip it, the texture will be thinner and more juice-like. A ripe frozen mango works as a swap.
  • Fresh ginger: A small knob adds a gentle heat that pairs well with the turmeric. Omit it if you prefer a milder drink, or swap for a pinch of ground ginger.
  • Black pepper: Just a small pinch. Piperine in black pepper significantly improves turmeric absorption. You won’t taste it in the final drink.

Turmeric Carrot Orange Smoothie

A five-minute blender smoothie made with fresh carrot, orange, and turmeric. Naturally sweet, dairy-free, and packed with vitamin A and C.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes
Servings: 2 servings
Calories: 145

Ingredients

  • 2 medium carrots, peeled and roughly chopped about 200 g total
  • 180 ml fresh orange juice from about 2 large oranges
  • 1 frozen ripe banana about 120 g, sliced before freezing
  • 1/4 tsp ground turmeric or 1-inch fresh turmeric, grated
  • 1/2 tsp fresh ginger grated, about a small knob
  • 1 pinch black pepper
  • 120 ml cold water or coconut water add more for thinner consistency
  • 4 to 6 ice cubes optional, for a colder result

Method

  1. Peel and roughly chop the carrots into 2 to 3 cm pieces so the blender can handle them easily.
  2. Juice the oranges and measure out 180 ml. Set aside.
  3. Add the chopped carrot, orange juice, frozen banana, ground turmeric, grated ginger, and black pepper to the blender.
  4. Pour in 120 ml of cold water or coconut water.
  5. Blend on high for 60 to 90 seconds until completely smooth and no visible carrot pieces remain.
  6. Check the consistency. If it’s too thick, add water a tablespoon at a time and blend briefly.
  7. Taste and adjust by adding a squeeze more orange juice if the turmeric flavor is too sharp.
  8. Pour over ice if desired and serve immediately.

Notes

Add a tablespoon of ground flaxseed or chia seeds to boost fiber and omega-3s without changing the flavor. Blend them in with everything else.

Tips for Success

  • Chop carrots into small pieces before blending so your blender doesn’t struggle with the texture.
  • Use a frozen banana straight from the freezer to get a thicker, colder smoothie without adding ice.
  • Blend on high for at least 60 seconds to fully break down the carrot fibers and get a smooth result.
  • Add liquid gradually, starting with the orange juice, then adding water only if the blender stalls.
  • Taste before serving and squeeze in a little extra orange juice if the turmeric flavor feels too sharp.

Variations

  • Swap banana for frozen mango to make this smoothie fully tropical and slightly tangier.
  • Add a tablespoon of almond butter for extra protein and a nutty background note.
  • Stir in a scoop of plain protein powder for a post-workout version with more staying power.

Storage and Reheating

This smoothie is best drunk straight after blending. The carrot and orange will start to separate and oxidize within an hour.

If you need to prep ahead, store it in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 12 hours. Give it a good shake or quick blend before drinking.

Freezing is not ideal for the finished smoothie, but you can freeze individual portions of the raw ingredients (chopped carrot, frozen banana, ginger) in bags and blend to order.

Serving Suggestions

Pour it into a wide glass over a few ice cubes if you like it extra cold. A sprinkle of ground turmeric or a thin orange slice on the rim makes it look put-together without any real effort.

Pair it with a couple of soft-boiled eggs or a slice of whole grain toast for a breakfast that actually keeps you going until lunch.

It also works well alongside a light roasted squash grain bowl or as an afternoon snack when you need something substantial but not heavy.

FAQ

Why does my turmeric carrot orange smoothie taste bitter?

Bitterness usually comes from too much turmeric or from using old, dry carrots. Start with a quarter teaspoon of turmeric and add more to taste. Fresh, firm carrots also blend sweeter than older ones.

Can I use carrot juice instead of fresh carrots in this smoothie?

Yes, about half a cup of carrot juice replaces two medium carrots. The texture will be thinner and less filling since you’re losing the fiber, but the flavor stays close.

How do I keep this turmeric smoothie from staining my blender or hands?

Rinse your blender immediately after pouring to prevent turmeric from setting. For hands, a quick scrub with a little dish soap and a lemon half works well.

Is this turmeric carrot orange smoothie safe to drink every day?

For most people, yes. The amounts of turmeric used here are well within the range considered safe for daily use. If you’re on blood thinners or have a specific condition, check with your doctor first.

What goes well with this smoothie for a balanced breakfast?

It pairs well with something protein-rich like a high protein chickpea omelette, Greek yogurt, or nut butter on toast. The smoothie is higher in natural sugars and carbs, so adding protein helps balance the meal.

Is this turmeric carrot smoothie suitable for a vegan diet?

Yes, the base recipe uses no dairy or animal products. Just check that any protein powder or add-ins you use are also plant-based.
